For the new exhibition area “Rainforest Network” at the Museum Koenig in Bonn, we created an interactive installation on the topic of the rainforest.

The Alexander Koenig Zoological Research Museum (ZFMK) is one of the largest natural history research museums in Germany. Its new section is dedicated to the importance of the rainforest ecosystem. The Rainforest Table illustrates the connection between our daily consumption and the state of tropical rainforests.

There are two interactive stations, each equipped with five everyday capacitive objects produced using 3D printing. Touching the objects triggers projections onto the objects and the table surface.

The base in the center of the table consists of a Plexiglas cube containing a highly detailed miniature model of a section of rainforest. The canopy of trees extends above the tabletop and serves as a projection surface on which various “health conditions” of the rainforest are displayed.

LEDs integrated into the table base also adapt to the rainforest’s conditions and vary the lighting of the miniature model. Atmospheric sounds support the respective visualizations via directional speakers to avoid disturbing other exhibition areas.
