Museum Ludwig | Carolyn Lazards / Haegue Yang
Every two years, Museum Ludwig in Cologne presents contemporary art from its collection. This year’s theme focuses on different understandings of time.
Carolyn Lazard’s work “Extended Stay” consists of an articulated arm mount commonly used in medical facilities. A monitor is attached to its end, showing television programmes in a continuous loop, changing every 90 seconds. Visitors take on the perspective of patients who, due to illness, are required to spend an extended period of time in hospital.
Haegue Yang’s installation “Mountains of Encounter” addresses a meeting between Korean independence activist Kim San and the American journalist Nym Wales, also known as Helen Foster Snow, in the mountainous Chinese region of Yan’an. The red blinds evoke mountain formations, which take on a threatening effect through the use of light. Within this abstract new structure, cultural codes of East and West are placed alongside one another and brought into dialogue.
235 Media supported the artists Carolyn Lazard and Haegue Yang in the realisation of their works and implemented the media installations.
