MAKK | Pentagon Projection Screen
With “Design Gruppe Pentagon,” the Museum of Applied Arts is dedicating its first monographic exhibition to the collective. Founded in 1985 by Gerd Arens, Wolfgang Laubersheimer, Reinhard Müller, Ralph Sommer, and Meyer Voggenreiter, the members quickly became leading figures of New German Design. They combined materials such as steel and Plexiglas not only with stone, rubber, and leather, but also with everyday objects. In 1987, the collective participated in documenta 8 and the São Paulo Biennial with the “Café Casino” project.
In the central exhibition hall of the MAK, the group’s furniture is presented in a large-scale installation. The objects are positioned in front of a massive projection screen. A film collage is shown on this screen, reflecting on the 1980s and placing the works in a historical context.
For this purpose, 235 Media produced a nearly borderless projection screen measuring 17 m wide and 5.2 m high, which was installed behind the podium displaying the staged design objects and pieces of furniture. The 90-square-meter projection surface is illuminated by two 15,000-ANSI-lumen projectors using the soft-edge technique and a video server as the playback device. The projection was adjusted using video mapping so that the furniture pieces staged on the platform were cut out of the projection and cast no shadows.
