Hafenamt Dortmund | Schifffahrt und Hafen

The Dortmund Port Authority building, designed by city building inspector and architect Friedrich Kullrich, was constructed in 1889 and has always served as a landmark for incoming boaters in the Port of Dortmund. The building, which is a designated historic landmark, houses the new permanent exhibition “Shipping and the Port” by Dortmunder Hafen AG, which provides information about the shipping industry and modern port operations. Visitors gain insight into the history and current development of the Port of Dortmund.

A highlight of this exhibition is the expansive multimedia installation detailing the origins and evolution of the Port of Dortmund. A quay wall running around a virtual harbor basin allows visitors to view the past, present, and future of the Port of Dortmund from a bird’s-eye perspective. An audio guide, along with historical film footage and brief statements from a wide variety of professional fields, also offers a personal glimpse into the world of one of Europe’s largest inland ports.
