Archäologisches Fenster am Münster
With the Archaeological Window at the Cathedral (AFaM), Herford has gained a walk-through museum that combines the excavated remains of the former Imperial Abbey of Herford with state-of-the-art media technology. Set against a backdrop of historic architecture and archaeological sites, the exhibition does not reconstruct history but rather allows visitors to experience it firsthand at the original location.
235 MEDIA was responsible for the complete technical equipment and installation of the exhibition. The goal was to integrate modern media technology into the museum’s open architecture in such a way that it complements the historical structure without drawing attention to itself. Each installation was individually planned and tailored to the building’s specific requirements as well as for long-term indoor and outdoor use.
A total of seven media stations were created, featuring large-format LED walls, monitor columns, and audio installations that guide visitors through the history of the former convent. For all media systems, 235 MEDIA developed custom substructures and enclosures that seamlessly blend technology, design, and architecture into a cohesive whole. A central LED wall serves as the spatial focal point of the exhibition, linking the historical content with a contemporary visual presentation.
In the background, a specially designed technical infrastructure ensures the reliable operation of all media installations. Time- and sensor-controlled playback, remote maintenance, and specially programmed touch applications link all stations into an intelligent integrated system that operates continuously, energy-efficiently, and with minimal maintenance. In this way, the technology remains virtually invisible—creating space for what truly matters: an encounter with an extraordinary piece of history.
