Revolutionary, scholar, journalist, or Marxist? Karl Marx is one of the best-known, but also most controversial and misunderstood figures of the 19th century. May 5, 2018, marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of the philosopher and social theorist, who was born in Trier. To mark this occasion, a major cultural-historical exhibition dedicated to this significant 19th-century thinker was held, shedding light on his life, his most important works, and his multifaceted influence during his time.

The major state exhibition “KARL MARX 1818–1883. LIFE. WORK. TIME.” ran from May 5 to October 21, 2018, and was on view at two museums in Trier: the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier and the Stadtmuseum Simeonstift Trier. In addition, two other partner exhibitions took place simultaneously at the Museum Karl-Marx-Haus and the Museum am Dom.

At the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier, Karl Marx’s intellectual and political development was explored across 1,000 m², with a focus on Marx’s works and the era in which they were written. Under the title “Station of a Life,” the Stadtmuseum Simeonstift Trier traced the eventful life of Karl Marx. The tour, set in an exhibition area of just under 600 m², traced Marx’s life journey from his childhood and youth in Trier, through his student years and professional experiences, to his exile in London. The Karl-Marx-Haus Museum is Karl Marx’s birthplace and opened a new permanent exhibition on May 5, 2018, focusing on the historical impact of Marx’s ideas up to the present day.

235 MEDIA created six media installations for the new permanent exhibition at the Karl-Marx-Haus Museum in Trier, producing and implementing the media content. In addition to three monitor installations and an interactive audio chair, the media technology setup includes an LED mesh and an interactive reading book. Furthermore, 235 MEDIA handled the concept, graphic design, programming, and sound design for seven media stations at the Simeonstift City Museum.
